EGO ELLA MAY

South Londoner Ego Ella May has grown with her hometown's jazz scene, working with the likes of Oscar Jerome, Joe Armon-Jones (Ezra Collective), Wu-Lu and Eddie Hick (Sons of Kemet). Her sound is rooted in jazz and neo-soul, with vocals that sooth the soul, and thought-provoking lyrics that’ll broaden your horizon, it’s lavender scented bliss! She’s been making and releasing music for years, but it’s only recently that she’s received the glory that she deserves. Ego is currently in full creative bloom, with the release of her second album Honey For Wounds, released on 26th June. The album is certainly as remedial as the title suggests, from the Portishead-trip-hop vibe of opening track ‘Alright’, featuring trumpet from Grammy-nominated Theo Crocker, to ‘How Long Til We’re Home’, a peaceful protest to the government’s inadequacy and lack of humanity. We were absolutely thrilled to discover that Ego was recently awarded the Best Jazz Act at the MOBO awards, the seal of approval that re-affirms what a unique talent she is. -Ellie Rose-Davies
